CONSOL Energy Inc. and Komatsu Mining Corp. jointly deployed a personal proximity detection system in a high production longwall face in 2017. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety and Health Technology Innovations Award in Coal was awarded to Consol and Komatsu in 2018 for making a monumental effort in applying this technology and improving mine operator safety underground. The presentation will briefly cover the technology and challenges experienced during the development and deployment of the personal proximity detection system for use in an underground mining application.
